Day 18: Simple and Smart

February 22, 2010

Hello and welcome to Day 18 of 28/28/28 – in which for the 28 days of February, I have challenged myself to wear 28 different outfits that cost $28 or less.

The purpose of the challenge is to prove that you can look fashionable on a budget.

Here’s the Price Breakdown for Day 18′s outfit:

Jacket:  Casual Corner $4.69

Sweater:  Petite Sophisticates $3.59

Skirt:  Petite Sophisticates $13.99 (Fashion Junction consignment store)

Shoes:  Ellen Tracy $3.39

Total Cost$25.66

I think I’m going to arrange my posts so you can get the Price Breakdown immediately.  Then if I have anything insightful or clever to share, I’ll do it after you’ve seen the outfit and the price, and if you have some time, you can stay and chat with me.

Or listen to me ramble.

Because I really don’t have anything clever to say about this outfit…except:

- I think I’m a houndstooth-aholic, as well as a beltaholic.  Anything I see in houndstooth I buy.  But this sweater is a great statement sweater, and is one of my favorite finds. It’s one of those “A-ha” moments, when my heart stops the second I see it, and I know I’ve found a treasure.

In fact, if I would have seen this at a retail store, I probably would have bought it, even if it cost $50.  That’s how much I like this sweater.  It would work just as well to class up a nice pair of black jeans or black slacks.

- I knew I needed a pop of color for this black and white ensemble, so instead of reaching for a red belt (ha ha), I wore this pin that my sister Paula made from handmade paper.  She has a whole line of beautiful, colorful pins called “Pinnables”, and the unique shapes and bold colors she uses always provide a nice ornamental aspect to an oufit.  This one is a fish, by the way.  The picture isn’t very clear.

- The skirt is one of my favorites too, as far as fit and length.  It has a really pretty flowery-embroidered detail, too, but unfortunately it’s so subtle you really can’t see it.  I suppose if I wore just a plain silk blouse, the detail would be emphasized more.

I don’t have anything else to say about this outfit except that I really like it.  Simple and smart.

  1. Hi – I saw you on the news the other day and you inspired me to do some thrift store shopping myself. I scored big time yesterday at Goodwill. I found an Oscar De La Renta coat for $9.99. I Googled it and found it at Overstock.com for $120.00! Whoo hoo! I also found some black capris from the Limited with the coveted red tag of the day $1.29, and some nylon/spandex tees from Gap and Target. I think I may now be addicted.

    • Oh Jeri! I am getting chills reading this!! Don’t you love researching your finds on the Internet and finding out how much they are worth?? Your email has inspired me to go back and dig more! Ha ha!
But Capris are also a great thing to shop for – because you can find them in every color – black, tan, olive green, brown, etc. from great brands such as Gap, The Limited, Banana Republic, etc,..for dirt cheap! And my absolute favorite tee I own is a white Spandex Banana Republic tee I found for $2.29…
Thanks for your story – I can feel the excitement!!
