Shoe Story, Part Two: Secondhand Shopaholic gets a wedgie.

April 2, 2010

Well, I actually got four. Read on.

Welcome to Part Two of  Shoe Story – where I fended off the condescending attitudes at the teen- to-twenty-something retail store Plato’s Closet employees, and bought 7 pairs of shoes for $82.  You can read Part One here, where I submit the receipt as evidence, and introduce you to the first two pairs of shoes.

This little shopping excursion has also reminded me my shopaholicism is just that – an “ism” and not a “wasm”.  While I can enter the store with all the intention of just browsing, or buying one or two items, all sanity and control still goes out the window once my foot hits the inside of a store.

The good news is (note:   you may have realized by now, there’s always a “good news” side of my shopping stories.  Some people define that as rationalization.  I define it as eternal optimism…)

but anyways, the good news is I am definitely spending alot less money, and getting alot more product.

Well, my sister pointed out that in reality, I’m probably not spending less money.  Has anyone ever pointed something out to you that really pissed you off, but when you thought about it for a while, they were probably right, and that pissed you off even more?  I think that’s why God invented moms and sisters.

Well, I referred her to my Buffalo Theory and told her to get off my back.  I mean, how can you argue with my logic that because I’m shopping secondhand, I’m really saving money, therefore, the more I shop, the more I save….

Now onto a happier subject – new shoes!  Well, new for me.  But actually, when you look at the heels of all these shoes, they haven’t been worn at all.  So they are new.

In Part One, I left you with a teaser of these adorable nuggets:

I LOVE the Unlisted pair, and I can’t wait to wear them.

I held off a whole wedge heels style for a long time.  This You Look Fab post back in 2007 kind of dates when wedge shoes became really hot and I didn’t like them at all.  Now that they’ve been around for awhile, I’m starting to get used to them, and now I like them.  I can see the brilliance in their comfort and architecture.

Well, guess what? Bad news for me – this updated 2010 YLF posts indicates that tall platform wedges are  on the way out. Just when I’m starting to like them.

Welcome to my life. I’m always 3 or 4 seasons behind fashion trends, because I guess I’m not real keen on new and different.  I like familiarity.  So now that I’ve seen wedges around for 3 years, they are familiar so I’ll buy them.  I guess that’s why I like secondhand stores so much.  I’m not one to embrace new fashion trends right when they come out.  I need to see them around for a while, before I decide whether to embrace them or not.  So by the time fashionable things get to secondhand stores, I’m all in and ready to wear them.

Huh.

Ladies and gentleman, you have just witnessed me experiencing an “a-ha” moment as I write this.   I’m going to sit on that last thought for awhile, and get back to you….

Well, I’m still going to love those Unlisted platform wedge shoes, whether they are in style or not.

The Nine West shoes, however, were a mistake.  I’m taking them back. I tried wearing them around my apartment last night, and I wouldn’t last an hour with them out in the real world.  Too high and stiletto-y.  What was I thinking?

Unfortunately, when I was buying these shoes, the girl informed me that you can’t return shoes. But surely I can resell them back, can’t I?  Can’t I?

Does anyone pick up on the fact that because of my age, and prior history, they might not buy them back from me??

They are so busted if they even try to tell me these shoes, which I just bought here a week ago, are “too mature”.   You don’t EVEN want to know me if that happens….(but stay tuned and I’ll let you know what happens!!)

OK time to get onto my last three pairs of shoes, which are – yes, you guessed it – wedge sandals.

But these are fun and colorful shoes!  I really can’t wait to wear them this spring and summer.

Steve Madden $11.20

So what do you think? OK to wear wedges?

Here’s a look at some sites that show what 2010 Spring shoes fashions are, and I do see some wedges shoes.  I also see some of the ugliest shoes EVER, and I’m pretty sure I’m NEVER going to wear those styles, no matter how long they stick around!

And, believe it or not, but all this talk about wedge shoes is a great segue into my next post!  Guess who invented wedge shoes?  Salvatore Ferragamo – read about it here.

And guess what I found at Goodwill the other day?  Ferragamo shoes.   Three pairs at $3.59 each.  I can’t wait to show you!!!

  1. I’m no fashionista, but I am a comfort-ista – so wedges will always be a part of my wardrobe! Those Nine West shoes hurt my feet just looking at them! :)

  2. I know – I really don’t know what I was thinking when I bought them. I was in the zone, and reason had literally left my body. I just can’t wait to try to take them back, and have them deny me. I think I’m going to take a tape recorder!!

  3. Not the right season…too many of the same item will also be problematic. I like the red

    • What do you mean not the right season? Are they summer shoes?

  5. I was getting my haircut yesterday, and I was reading a new copy of Vogue, and there were lots of wedges in them, so they may be _on_ the way out, but not out. I also read an article that ultra high heels are on their way out, too. Who knows?

Regarding comfort, I guess I don’t judge a shoe by it’s heel (or lack thereof). I have had many flat shoes that were very uncomfortable, and I’ve had heels that, despite being 3 1/2 inches or higher, were very comfortable. Getting the proper fit is the most important thing. Sometimes add ins like heel grips can help with problem areas. Sometimes, the shoe just needs a little breaking in. Also, I’m generally willing to take a little pain for heels because they make my legs look so good. Flats just don’t do that. (Plus, at 5’3″, I need the height.)

  6. PS–I love the brown wedges!
