Houndstooth Cropped Cardigan
May 20, 2010I wore this last week when I was mad at the weather. The Inspiration Calendar outfit was supposed to be “Top a Skirt with a White Cardigan Combo”, and outside it was cold, rainy and dreary. Even if I did wear white before Memorial Day, I couldn’t pull off anything bright and cheery – I would look like a fish out of water wearing something that screamed “Spring is here!” when Spring was not even be a blip on the radar.
And it was just too cold to wear a skirt!
So I did wear a white cardigan. Well a black and white cardigan.
Houndstooth Cropped Cardigan: Petite Sophisticates $3.89 (Goodwill)
Sleeveless White Blouse: Ralph Lauren $3.39 (Goodwill)
Pants: Banana Republic $1 (Bargain Basket Dollar Days Sale)
Boots: Danielle $3.69 (Goodwill)
Total Cost: $11.97 (Under 12 bucks! Now THAT’s what I’m talking about!!!)
This houndstooth cardigan was a total impulse buy several months ago – and it seemed like a slam dunk at the time. I didn’t even try it on. How could I go wrong with a Petite Sophisticates cropped cardigan? Houndstooth is my favorite pattern – I mean, this was surely a fashion home run.
Well, when I got home and tried it on, I was horribly disappointed. What is up with the poofy sleeves?? And the low circular neckline just didn’t seem to fit right to me. I hated it. I cursed it and threw it into the back of my closet, mad at myself for not trying it on. Darn you, shopaholic! When will you learn to try things on!!
But looking at this photo, I’m glad I gave it a second shot.
The boots in this outfit are one of my recent footwear purchases. They are truly a great find. It took me three tries to finally find the right pair of red boots, but I finally got it right with these. I’ll explain more in a future post…..

What about with a black blouse? I don’t like u-necked sweaters either. Good luck!
I think that this sweater should be returned to your local Goodwill. It just doesn’t do that much for you. You seeem to have lots of other things that are much more flattering.
I’m loving your blog! I’m getting a lot of ideas from your posts, and I think I need to make a GW run soon. Keep writing!
Thanks, Jessica – I really appreciate the feedback! Sometimes I feel like my writing is so blah, but when I read that I am giving people ideas, then that is all the ecnouragement I need!! Thanks!!!
Hrm… I think it is a wee bit unflattering, but it’s because of the sleeve length plus boxiness. It puffs you out right at your natural waist because of the contrast between the black and the white. Try it with black underneath and perhaps long necklaces?
I would sooo take a scissors to those sleeves and make a cap-sleeve thingie from it. Or be playing with safety pins, because it’s such a neat pattern.
